Report Abuse

Abuse refers to the intentional harm of another person. It can take many forms, including physical, emotional, sexual, or psychological abuse, as well as neglect. Abuse may involve actions that cause direct harm or the failure to provide essential care and protection. It can occur in any environment, including homes, schools, workplaces, or care settings, and may be perpetrated by someone known to the individual.

Signs of abuse may vary, but common indicators include unexplained injuries, extreme withdrawal or anxiety, fearfulness, changes in behaviour,mood or personality, difficulty sleeping, or avoidance of certain people or places. A child may also display age-inappropriate knowledge or language. While these signs do not always mean abuse is occurring, it is important to report concerns so they can be assessed by trained professionals.

Abuse can present in various forms, including but not limited to:

Physical abuse: inflicting bodily harm or injury.

Sexual abuse: any non-consensual sexual contact, exploitation and sexual interactions with an underage person ( regardless if the underage person gave “consent”) .

Emotional or psychological abuse: verbal attacks, threats, manipulation, or humiliation.

Neglect: failing to meet a person’s basic needs, such as food, shelter, safety, or medical care.

Exposure to violence: being present during acts of violence, even if not directly harmed.

All forms of abuse can have serious, lasting effects on well-being and need to be reported.

Yes. In most cases, concerns about abuse can be reported anonymously. You do not need definitive proof to make a report—reasonable concern is enough. Reports can be made to local RCMP or to Child and Family Services, and your identity can be kept confidential. Trained professionals will assess the report and determine the appropriate response.

If someone is in immediate danger, call the RCMP at 867-979-1111. To report suspected abuse or neglect, contact Child and Family Services (CFS) at 867-975-5777. Reports can be made anonymously. Umingmak Centre does not accept direct reports; we become involved only when a case is referred to us by an authorized agency such as the RCMP or CFS.
